Als ich 1988 für einen intensiveren, zweiten Besuch nach Mannheim kam und die Innenstadt erkundetet, hatte ich ein Photo von 1945 in Erinnerung, auf dem man vom Paradeplatz in der Mitte aus bis zum Hauptbahnhof über Trümmer hinweg blicken konnte. Und ich dachte: Man könnte wieder eine große Bombe reinschmeißen und es mal hübsch neu aufbauen.
Aber mittlerweile kenne ich die Ecken, Stadteile und Randgemeinden, in denen ich mit Besuchern spazieren gehen kann um sich an architektonischer Schönheit oder Vielfalt zu erfreuen. Und wenn alles nicht hilft, fährt man mit der OEG nach Weinheim* und spaziert durch die Altstadt und den Schlosspark. Von dort aus schreitet man dann mit herrschaftlich gemächlichen Schritten zur Schlusseinkehr von oben durch das Tor herunter auf den Marktplatz.

* Weinheim ist wie Heidelberg, nur ohne Touristen und ein bisschen kleiner. Dafür hat es 2 Schlösser.

When I came for a second, more intense visit to Mannheim in 1988 and explored the city centre, I had a photo in mind from 1945 showing a view from the place of parades over the ruins to the main station. And I thought: You could throw a large bomb again and rebuilt it in a fancy way.
But in the mean time I do know places, quarters and suburbs where I can walk with visitors gaining pleasure in architectural beauties or diversity. And if this is not sufficient, drive to Weinheim* via the OEG and have a walkway throught the historic city and the castle’s park. For the final leg, stride downwards majestically through the gate onto the historic market place.
* Weinheim is alike Heidelberg, but, without tourists and smaller. On the other hand it has 2 castles.
